How to Check the Balance on Your EBT Card

In the United States, EBT (electronic benefit transfer) is a computerized system that enables its users to apply their government-assistance benefits at local retailers who accept the EBT card. EBT is used in all 50 states and replaces both food stamps and cash. Food stamps represent government assistance that helps recipients to buy food with their EBT card, without paying sales tax. Food-stamp benefits can be used only for food and cannot be used to purchase alcohol, prepared foods or non-food items, such as paper products.

Instructions

1. Online, visit the EBT portal website, EBTedge.com. Locate "EBT Cardholders" on the web page, then click "More Information."

2. Enter your EBT card number, located on the front of your card and click "Login."

3. Enter your PIN, then click "Enter." Your balance will appear on the screen within a few seconds, depending on the speed of your computer.

Tips & Warnings

• Use a telephone to call the customer service number on the back of your EBT card to get your balance.

• Your balance will also appear at the end of your most recent receipt when you make a purchase with your EBT card.

• Remember that not all retailers accept EBT cards. Verify participation in the program when shopping at stores for the first time.
