How to Register for Traffic School

For certain traffic violations, or as an opportunity to lower an insurance premium, many people consider attending traffic school; completing the school can remove violations from a driver's record or reduce the cost of the fine for the violation. Traffic school is a refresher course on the "Rules of the Road," and instructs people in how to avoid accidents. However, before you can attend traffic school, you must register to attend.

Instructions

    • 1

Pay the required fine by the court that gave you your ticket and elect to take the traffic school option. You may have to pay an additional levy to take the course. (If you did not receive a traffic ticket, skip this step.)

    • 2

Find a traffic school that you would like to attend. You may elect to attend a classroom-based traffic school, a correspondence course, or a course that you take online. Your court or insurance company should be able to provide a list of recommended traffic schools, or you can use a phone book to locate classroom-based traffic schools in your area.

    • 3

Contact the traffic school you wish to attend. You will need to provide your name, address, phone number, and in cases of traffic tickets, the court or police department that issued your ticket. You will also need to pay a tuition fee to attend the class. For online traffic school courses, you should sign up via their websites.

Tips & Warnings

  • Online traffic school and correspondence courses are typically faster than regular classes, and can be done at your own pace at your home or workplace. However, they require a lot of self-discipline. Most classroom courses take up to eight hours. Traffic schools cover topics such as defensive driving, tips on regulating speed and/or dealing with intersections, as well as information on the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and the dangers of speeding. If you are a senior, there may be specialized classes for you in your area; ask your insurance company or court for information.

  • If you are taking traffic school because of a moving violation, you must complete the traffic school course in the time given to you by the court (typically 30 days.) If you do not meet the deadline, you may face having a traffic conviction placed on your record.
