How to Treat Pediatric Molluscum

Molluscum contagiosum is a viral skin condition that is very common in children. It causes round, smooth bumps on the skin, but is painless and harmless. Treatment includes prescription skin medication, freezing therapy and minor surgical methods. As those treatments can be frightening to children, however, parents and pediatricians often prefer to control the infection and let it run its course.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the child to a pediatrician or other health-care professional. Although molluscum has no serious complications, it is important to confirm the diagnosis with a doctor.

    • 2

Examine the child thoroughly for bumps. They can appear anywhere on her body, even on the eyelids and in the armpits. Wear latex gloves and do not touch the bumps, as contact could pass the infection along to you.

    • 3

Cover each bump with a watertight bandage. This prevents picking and scratching, which spreads infection. Explain this to the child.

    • 4

Make sure she washes her hands frequently and thoroughly.

    • 5

Wash his towels, washcloths and clothing often. Place his clothes in the washing machine as soon as he is done wearing them.

    • 6

Look for new bumps at bath time. Examine him every few days.

    • 7

Consult your pediatrician or other doctor if the infection spreads rapidly or creates problems with the child's appearance. The doctor may prescribe a topical medication or remove the bumps through freezing or surgical scraping.
