Designing a restaurant so that customers and staff move efficiently to get work accomplished is important. It takes time to design the interior of the restaurant to work well for the kitchen staff, wait staff, and customers. Hiring a qualified restaurant designer is important. When designing the kitchen layout with the designer keep the entrance, kitchen, dining room and bar design in mind. It's important to have adequate room to work and for customers to move about and enjoy the dining experience.

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper
  • Pencils
  1. Step 1

Create a plan that describes the customer and type of restaurant you want to open. What type of food do you want to serve and what will the inside of the restaurant look like? Does the location match the client to whom you wish to sell? A good description of the restaurant helps you plan the layout and design of the entrance, kitchen, dining room and rest rooms effectively.

  2. Step 2

Design the entrance. Sketch the design on paper. The entrance should be wide enough to have an area for customers waiting for tables. A convenient place to pay checks should be situated near the entrance. This is the best place to have a cash register and cashier. The entrance should be wide enough for customers to enter and exit at the same time without congestion. A good-size waiting area is a plus for any restaurant.

  3. Step 3

Conceive the kitchen layout. Draw some details on paper. The kitchen should have shelves to store equipment. It must have room to put the equipment needed for cooking. This often means stoves, broilers, prep tables, refrigerators and dishwashers. A walk in storage area and freezer should be included. The kitchen should have room for staff to move around safely and quickly. Quality equipment makes it easier to work. Storage areas, prep areas, cooking areas and cleaning areas of the kitchen should be separate.

  4. Step 4

Design the dinning room. When designing the layout of the dining room think of the way traffic will move from the kitchen and bar to the dining room. Do you want booths, round tables or square tables? Wide aisles and ample room to move from the dining room to the kitchen and back is important. Think about the color and decor that will give your restaurant the atmosphere you want. Depending on your theme, details often are important to the customer experience. Jotting these all down before you meet with a designer helps you plan the layout more effectively.

  5. Step 5

Layout the restrooms with easy access for men, women and children.
