How to Avoid Water Retention During Pregnancy

Rising levels of estrogen during pregnancy can lead to water retention. This can be uncomfortable and discouraging for a pregnant woman to experience. Pregnant women may not be able to avoid water retention during their term, but it is possible to make some diet and lifestyle changes that will help reduce the effects of water retention and increase day-to-day comfort.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Reduce your sodium intake. Foods that are high in sodium can increase the symptoms of water retention. Increasing your potassium can also help to decrease water retention.

  2. Step 2

    Keep moving. Sitting still for long periods of time can cause fluids to build up in the extremities, which is uncomfortable. Sit with your legs elevated to keep fluids from pooling.

  3. Step 3

    Avoid caffeine. Like sodium, caffeine can increase the symptoms of fluid retention. Replace caffeinated beverages with water or fruit juice to help clear your system.

  4. Step 4

    Increase your water intake. This will flush the system regularly and keep fluid from building--plus, it's healthy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Water retention is normal but can be a sign of a dangerous condition known as preeclampsia. If you notice rapid weight gain, swelling in your hands and face, headaches, or high blood pressure, see a doctor immediately.
