The giant white bat plant is a plant grown primarily in the tropics and warm humid climates. It is found in southeast Asia and southern China. The white bat plant can be grown in warm climates but needs the protection of a greenhouse or conservatory in many regions. The flowers range in color from purple to a reddish brown and are topped with white floral leaves. These leaves are called brackets. In the United States, the plants grow well in Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Louisiana, Nevada and other areas with warm climates.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • White bat flower rhizomes or bulbs
  • Pots
  • Fertile soil
  • Compost
  • Foliar fertilizer
  • Sand
  • Worm vermicast
  1. Step 1

Plant the bat rhizomes in pots that are at least 6 inches wide. Plant in good quality soil mixed with sand. Plant the rhizome upright. Let 1/8 of the rhizome show above the soil when starting.

  2. Step 2

Add compost as the plant grows in the pot. Water the plant weekly during the growing season and once monthly with a foliar fertilizer mixed at half strength. Growing season is spring until late fall. Keep it in a humid area with plenty of indirect light. A sun porch or warm family room often works. Spray with water on leaves to maintain humidity for the plant.

  3. Step 3

The potting soil for the plant must drain well. The plant grows large, so repot the plant as needed to allow for growth of roots and the plant's increasing size. During winter months, keep the plant in warm temperatures that do not fall below 60 degrees. Water it less than in warm months and let it dry out more.

  4. Step 4

Mix a handful of worm vermicast with water in a 5-gallon container. Let it settle, then put it in a water can and water the bat plant with it during the growing season. It will help you produce flowers on the plant.
Replant at least once a year when in pots.

  5. Step 5

To propagate, divide rhizomes and repot. Another tip to propagate is to take fallen petals and wrap them around the base of the plant. Often, it will reseed itself. Small plants will begin to grow in soil that can be repotted.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember in winter months to let the plant dry out and do not water it as often. The plant often is dormant at this time.
