How to Grow Carpathian Walnut Trees
Carpathian walnut trees are fast-growing shade trees that produce thin-shelled, flavorful nuts. Though their growth is slow in the first year after planting, Carpathian walnut trees grow 4 to 5 feet each year once they are established. Carpathian walnuts begin producing walnuts between their fourth and seventh year, and by their 15th year, they can produce up to four barrels of walnuts. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Check to see how Carpathian walnut trees will grow in your area. Carpathian walnut trees grow best in USDA plant hardiness zones 5 through 8. This means that Carpathian walnut trees will grow best in areas where the average annual minimum temperature is between -20 degrees F and 20 degrees F.
-
2
Choose a planting location. Select a spot with fertile, well-drained soil that receives several hours of full sun each day and has at least 50 feet of lateral clearance.
-
-
3
Dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball of your Carpathian walnut tree. Amend the displaced soil by thoroughly mixing in a rich potting compost.
-
4
Remove the tree from its nursery container and insert into prepared hole. Cover the root system with amended soil, add a bit of water, then fill the hole to the top with more amended soil.
-
5
Water the tree to help the root system settle. Slow water your newly planted Carpathian walnut with a drip or soaker hose to help the moisture sink into the soil. Water it least once a week until the tree is established. Afterward, decrease watering to once every seven to 10 days in the absence of rain.
-
6
Fertilize your Carpathian walnut tree once a year, after its first year of growth, with a commercial chemical fertilizer. Apply fertilizer according to package directions.
-
7
As your Carpathian walnut grows, prune the tree to a central leader with up to five scaffold branches. Trim branches back when they grow unusually long to prevent the branches from bowing when the tree bears nuts.
-
8
Harvest your Carpathian walnuts when they fall to the ground, usually between late September to mid-October. Wash the harvested nuts with a high-powered garden hose and relocate them to a cool, dry place to dry out for two weeks before eating.

Tips & Warnings
Spread a thick layer of organic mulch over the soil underneath your Carpathian walnut tree to help conserve moisture and discourage weeds from growing.
Do not over-fertilize your tree or apply fertilizer to your tree directly. Fertilizing too often, or improperly, can permanently damage a Carpathian walnut tree.
