If you're invited to a 1970s costume party, you might want to take a look at John Travolta in "Saturday Night Fever" or Diane Keaton in "Annie Hall" before planning what you'll wear. The outfits in both of these movies capture some of the most common fashion trends of the decade. Fortunately for the invited party guest, there were enough varied looks during the 1970s to provide lots of possibilities for quirky costumes.

    1970s costumes for women

  1. Step 1

Decide on your basic outfit, choosing from one of three basic 1970s possibilities. If you opt for the Annie Hall look, it will require a pair of men's suit pants and a matching vest along with a long-sleeved white shirt. The "Earth Mother" costume will require a long, full skirt and a flowing blouse or a granny dress. And for those brave enough, hot pants and a halter-top are a torrid third choice.

  2. Step 2

Add some accessories. Annie Hall would want to wear a striped tie and black tie shoes. For the Earth Mother look, dress up your outfit with some beads and perhaps a necklace with a giant peace sign. Add a pair of earth shoes or sandals. Stand tall in your hot pants and halter top with the highest pair of go-go boots you can find--white would be the best color choice.

  3. Step 3

Work on your hair and makeup. Annie Hall and the Earth Mother prefer the long straight look and a minimum of makeup. However, if you're the go-go type, top your look of with a blond feathered wig, long eyelashes, and some blue eye shadow.

  5. Step 1

Pick out one of three 1970s looks. To totally pull off the John Travolta look, it will take a three-piece white suit. The next best bet is a leisure suit, particularly if you can find one in light blue or yellow. And if you want to imitate the latent hippies hanging around in the early 1970s, you can always go for the bell-bottom pants and a tie-dyed shirt.

  6. Step 2

Come up with some appropriate accessories. Your John Travolta look needs platform shoes and a silky black shirt. Under your leisure suit, you'll want a printed polyester shirt. And a hippie needs a headband and lots of beads. You might also want to carry a protest sign.

  7. Step 3

Look for a wig. You'll need one no matter what look you're going for unless you want to recreate those long sideburns, the hippie hair, or the wild perm look on your own.
