How to Patch an Intex Pool

Two of the biggest benefits of Intex swimming pools are that they're easy to set up and simple to maintain. These pools are constructed of a durable rubber material that stands up to the elements, yet is lightweight enough for yearly set-up and take-down. However, after regular use and being exposed to harsh pool chemicals, this sturdy surface can sustain holes and tears. Thankfully, patching an Intex pool is an easy job, that requires only a few supplies and 10 to 15 minutes of time.

Things You'll Need:

• Intex patching kit
• Cotton swab
• Scissors
• Clean cloth
• Permanent marker
• Air pump

Patching a Hole Under Water

1. Locate the patterned patching material that came with your pool.

2. Cut a patch in the shape of a circle to cover the hole, allowing at least 1/2-inch overlap on all sides of the damaged area.

3. Squeeze a pea-sized dollop of patching adhesive onto the circular patch.

4. Fold the patch in half so that the adhesive is inside the fold.

5. Allow the adhesive to cure for 10 minutes before applying over the hole.

6. Place the patch in the water, keeping it folded until you are near the damaged area.

7. Unfold the patch and place over the hole.

8. Smooth the patch to the pool surface, starting from the center of the patch and working to the edges to remove any air bubbles. Let the patch sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then repeat the smoothing process.

Patching Above Water Line and Below Inflatable Ring

9. Cut two patches in a circular shape using the patterned Intex patching material. Allow at least 1/2-inch overlap from the hole.

10. Place a pea-sized drop of adhesive around the hole on both the inside and outside of the pool surface and on both patches. Use a cotton swab to spread the adhesive, covering the entire patching area. Allow all three areas to sit for 10 minutes so the adhesive can cure.

11. Adhere one patch inside of the pool surface. Smooth the patch from the center to the outer edges. Repeat the process with the second patch on the outside of the pool surface.

12. Allow the patched area to sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then repeat the smoothing process to ensure a tight bond.

Patching a Hole in the Inflatable Ring

13. Inflate the upper ring fully, using an air pump. This will help you locate the hole.

14. Mark the hole with a permanent marker so it is easy to find.

15. Cut a circular-shaped patch to cover the hole and allow a one-inch overlap. The patch should be cut from the clear patching material included with your Intex pool.

16. Squeeze a pea-sized dollop of adhesive onto the patch as well as on the surface surrounding the hole.

17. Allow the adhesive to cure for 10 minutes.

18. Place the patch over the damaged area and smooth it down, starting in the center of the patch and working toward the edges.

19. Allow the patched surface to sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then repeat the smoothing process.

Tips & Warnings

• Clean all areas in need of repair with a cloth before starting the patching project.
• Allow patches to sit for 12 hours before swimming in the pool.
• If the underwater hole can be accessed from inside and outside of the pool, place a patch on both sides.
• Do not used a squared patch to cover the hole. The sharp edges make it easier for the patch to peel off the repaired surface.
