How to Clean a SCUBA Mask

When you buy a brand new dive mask, it comes with a thick film which is designed to protect the silicone when the product is being shipped. If you were to dive with the film still on your mask, you'll find that your mask fogs up, so you'll need to first remove that film using toothpaste and a toothbrush. Once you've removed the film, you'll still want to clean your mask with toothpaste from time to time, to maintain your scuba mask.

Things You'll Need

  • Dive mask
  • Toothpaste
  • Old toothbrush
  • Sink with hot and cold water

Instructions

    • 1

Apply a small amount of mildly abrasive toothpaste onto each of the lenses on the inside of your mask.

    • 2

Using an old toothbrush, scrub the inside of the lenses with the toothpaste.

    • 3

Rinse the mask with warm water to get rid of any toothpaste.

    • 4

Place your mask under the cold water faucet and allow the cold water to get into your mask until the lenses get very cold.

    • 5

Test to see if the lenses are clean. Bring the cold mask close to your face and exhale onto the inside lenses. If the mask fogs up after you breathe on it, then it is still not clean.

    • 6

Repeat step 1to 5 until your mask no longer fogs up when cold.

Tips & Warnings

  • After every dive, make sure that you rinse your mask thoroughly with warm water to get rid of any debris.
