Certain plants, such as Rose of Sharon, hate wet feet. Wet feet are caused when plants are overwatered or planted in areas of poor drainage. When water does not drain, it slowly kills the Rose of Sharon. The plant can be saved by changing your watering habits or amending the soil to improve drainage.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Stop watering Rose of Sharon to give it time to recover.

  2. Step 2

Dig up Rose of Sharon plants with a shovel by excavating the soil around the root ball and lifting the plant from the ground.

  3. Step 3

Continue to loosen the soil in which the Rose of Sharon rests to a depth of three to six inches.

  4. Step 4

Mix peat moss and sand into the loosened soil.

  5. Step 5

Place Rose of Sharon back onto the planting hole.

  6. Step 6

Fill the planting hole with soil and press gently to remove air pockets.

Tips & Warnings
  • Large Rose of Sharon cannot be lifted from the soil easily. However, if a Rose of Sharon has reached a great height, it probably does not have issues with clay soil. If this is the case, watering the plant less frequently will be sufficient to prevent overwatering problems in the future.
  • If improving the drainage of the soil does not help, you may have to move your Rose of Sharon to a new location.
