Over time, the teeth of a band saw become dull or a different blade is needed to cut the material that you are using. Installing a band saw blade is easy as long as you follow the guides and made sure the teeth are facing the correct direction. With minimal effort, you can change the blade in a matter of minutes without incident.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gloves
  1. Step 1

Unscrew the nuts that hold the doors over the blade and the blade wheels. There are usually two flanged nuts that can be easily unscrewed so the doors can be lifted to expose the blade and the two blade wheels.

  2. Step 2

Turn the handle to loosen one of the saw blade wheels. This knob will slowly loosen the wheel so the old blade can be easily removed for replacement.

  3. Step 3

Carefully remove the old blade using gloves; the teeth can be very sharp. You will need to pull it out of the guide rollers located at the bottom in the middle where the blade does most of the cutting.

  4. Step 4

Unravel the new blade--it will be twisted to fit into a box. The blade is oval in shape when unraveled, but is twisted to conserve space. The blade may injure you, so be careful when you untwist it as it may be under pressure and quickly expand to its actual size.

  5. Step 5

Remove the plastic protector over the teeth. This is in place to protect the user from cutting himself while unraveling the blade. Throw it out or recycle it.

  6. Step 6

Place the new blade over one of the wheels and wrap it around to the other side, making sure the teeth are pointed in the correct direction. There should be a sticker or indication of the teeth direction on the saw. Slip the blade through the guide rollers as well. At this point, it will be loose.

  7. Step 7

Tighten the movable wheel until the blade is taut. Using your hand, push on the blade until it is very tight, but do not over-tighten or it may snap at the weld point.

  8. Step 8

Turn on the saw and make sure the blade is on the wheel correctly and that it is traveling through the guide rollers correctly. Look for any areas where it may be snagging or rubbing and loosen the wheel slightly to readjust until it is traveling smoothly without hesitation.

  9. Step 9

Close the two doors and secure them by tightening their corresponding flange nuts.

Tips & Warnings
  • Clean out the inside of the saw when you install a new blade. Debris can build up in the saw and cause malfunctions.
