How to Cover Shrubs
Shrubs are a favored addition to the home landscape, providing flowers and foliage for foundation plantings and edges. Many shrubs are winter hardy, but some need protection from winter's ravages of ice and snow build up. Trim all dead or damaged branches.

Encase the shrub in a layer of insulating protection. For small shrubs, cut the bottom out of a large paper bag. Slide the bag over the shrub and fill the bag with dead leaves.

Wrap larger shrubs with burlap sheeting (available from garden supply centers). Tie with twine.

Build a removable fence. Winter injury can often be prevented by constructing a barrier of burlap or similar material to protect from winter winds.

Apply an 8- to 12-inch mounded layer of organic mulch around the base of your shrub. Straw, dead leaves, aged non-treated sawdust or pine needles can be used.

Tips & Warnings
Shrubs in a vigorous growing condition late in the fall are most likely to suffer winter damage. Avoid late-summer fertilizing or pruning.
Heavily soak the roots of your shrubs with water prior to the first freeze.
