Instructions

    • 1

Trim all dead or damaged branches.

    • 2

Encase the shrub in a layer of insulating protection. For small shrubs, cut the bottom out of a large paper bag. Slide the bag over the shrub and fill the bag with dead leaves.

    • 3

Wrap larger shrubs with burlap sheeting (available from garden supply centers). Tie with twine.

    • 4

Build a removable fence. Winter injury can often be prevented by constructing a barrier of burlap or similar material to protect from winter winds.

    • 5

Apply an 8- to 12-inch mounded layer of organic mulch around the base of your shrub. Straw, dead leaves, aged non-treated sawdust or pine needles can be used.

Tips & Warnings

  • Shrubs in a vigorous growing condition late in the fall are most likely to suffer winter damage. Avoid late-summer fertilizing or pruning.

  • Heavily soak the roots of your shrubs with water prior to the first freeze.
