How to Get a Duplicate Car Title

1. Gather the documents to prove ownership of the vehicle. A state registration usually works best. If you recently purchased the vehicle, you'll need the bill of sale or purchase order.

2. Contact your state's motor vehicle department. Find out if you can obtain a duplicate title by mail, or if you need to visit a motor vehicle office. Find out what the fees are for applying for a duplicate title.

3. Obtain a lien release, if applicable. If you originally financed your vehicle or offered the title as collateral for a loan, you'll need to obtain a written lien release statement from the bank or finance company.

4. Visit your nearby motor vehicle office to apply for a duplicate title or follow the state's instructions for applying by mail or online. Bring the required documents with you or mail them with your application.

• If you recently purchased the vehicle, and have not yet registered it, the previous owner will need to accompany you to the motor vehicle office. If you are applying by mail, ask the state representative if there is a form the previous owner needs to sign.
