How to Put Up Curtains on Sliding Doors With Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are practical and inexpensive but can make a room feel cold and impersonal. An easy way to add color and interest to a room with a sliding glass door with vertical blinds is by adding curtains. You can choose curtains that are dummy panels, meaning they don't move but simply frame the sliding glass door, or you can choose curtains that will close over the vertical blinds. Either way you'll retain the privacy and light control provided by the vertical blinds.

Things You'll Need:

• Curtain panels
• Curtain rod with included support brackets and hardware
• Drywall anchors
• Stud finder
• Power drill
• Measuring tape
• Level

1. Measure 4 to 6 inches above the sliding glass door frame and 4 inches out (if you have the wall space), and mark this spot for the first bracket. Measure and mark the same distance on the opposite side, and measure and mark the center.

2. Use the stud finder to determine whether any of your marks fall over a stud and put an X through any mark that does fall on a stud.

3. Use the power drill to screw in drywall anchors at the marks, not over a stud until the head is flush with the wall.

4. Attach the curtain brackets using the power drill, but do not fully tighten the screws. Use the level to make sure each end is level with the center bracket. If slightly off, use your hand to nudge the bracket up or down. Once level, tighten the screws.

5. Slide the curtains onto the rod, and insert into the brackets. Adjust the curtains so they hang evenly between the center support bracket and each end bracket, and tighten the small screw found on the underside of the bracket until the rod is secure.
