How to Store Tulip Bulbs for Fall Planting
Tulips grow from bulbs. Bulbs multiply and eventually will crowd their allotted space, forcing you to split or divide them. If tulip are too dense and unable to spread in their present location, they may be excavated from the soil and stored for fall planting in a new location. Does this Spark an idea?

Leave the bulbs in the garden until the leaves turn yellow. The yellowing coloration indicates that the tulip has stored all its energy in the bulb and is ready to be dug up.

Dig a circle around each group of bulbs, straight down for at least 8 to 10 inches around the entire clump.

Pull back on the shovel handle to free the bulbs, lifting the clump with your hands.

Knock off the excess dirt from the bulbs and separate them.

Store the bulbs in a paper bag in a cool, dark spot such as a basement or closet.

Replant in the fall.

Tips & Warnings
When you replant the bulbs, choose the largest ones. They will be the more mature plants with larger blooms.
If left in the ground, do not over water the planted bulbs during the summer season. Tulip bulbs need to dry out and will rot in soggy soil.
