How to Secure a Camper to a Truck Bed

Camper shells add an extra level of utility to your truck. With a shell, you can place things inside of the bed and not have to worry about them getting damaged by the elements. Shells also can secure your load from potential theft, a nice feature if you're using your truck to carry expensive tools. Installing a shell doesn't take long and, with help, can take less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift up the shell with the help of your assistants. Distribute the weight equally among each of you, so the shell is easier to carry. Place the shell on the bed rails.

    • 2

Align the shell with the bed, making sure the glass door on the back closes correctly.

    • 3

Crawl into the bed and slide the J-hooks that come with the shell over the edge of the camper rail so that it goes over the inner lip of the shell and the inner bed rail of the bed. This will clamp the shell to the bed and make sure it stays in place.

    • 4

Tighten the J-hooks using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set.

    • 5

Crawl out of the shell and make sure the shell is still aligned correctly. If you have to, loosen the j-hooks and push the shells back in place, then tighten them again.
