Instructions

  1. Treatment

    • 1

Rest the thumb, especially the first 48 hours after injury. Avoid any activities that may re-injure or aggravate the ligament. Do not participate in sports. Even simple day-to-day tasks should be completed with your other hand.

    • 2

Apply ice wrapped in a cloth or towel onto the injured thumb for 15 minutes per hour for the first day. On the following two to three days, apply the ice for 15 minutes every three hours. Icing the injury will help the swelling subside and ease pain associated with swelling.

    • 3

Wear a hand brace designed specifically for a thumb ligament injury as provided by your doctor. This ensures that the hand is kept in the proper position for healing and prevenst further injury.

    • 4

Take an anti-inflammatory medication. Your doctor may prescribe you another specific drug, but aspirin and Tylenol are both effective medications. Medication will ease pain, reduce swelling and prevent ligament inflammation.

    • 5

Keep the hand elevated above the level of the heart to further help reduce swelling. At night, prop your hand on pillows to keep it elevated.

Tips & Warnings
