1
Put a cool-mist humidifier in your child's room and run it all night, if possible. This may help your child sleep more comfortably.
-
2
Steam up your bathroom by turning on the hot water in the bath or shower with the door closed. Sit with your child for about twenty minutes, encouraging him or her to breathe in the steam. This is especially helpful for croupy coughs (coughs that sound like barking).

Have your child take a warm shower and breathe in the steam. You can also encourage your older child to let the water run on his or her chest, which can bring some relief.
-
4
Give your child cool or warm drinks, whichever soothes the throat the most. Avoid giving your child orange juice, soda or other acidic drinks.
-
5
Give your child honey (if older than age one year). Studies have shown that honey can help soothe a coughing child and enable him or her to sleep more comfortably.
