If you are traveling in Great Britain, it is helpful to know how to convert Great Britain pounds (GBP) to United States dollars (USD). You can use a travel conversion calculator that does the work for you, or you can use a regular calculator to figure out the conversion. The formula for converting foreign currency is simple. All you need to know is the exchange rate, which can be found online or in the finance section of a newspaper.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Calculator
  1. Step 1

Look up the current exchange rate. If you are in the United States, the exchange rate will be written as the number of US dollars per 1 British pound. For example, 1.667 USD = 1 GBP

  2. Step 2

Convert the exchange rate to read the number of British pounds per 1 USD. The formula is 1 divided by the current exchange rate you found in Step 1. For example, 1 / 1.667 = .5998. So, .5998 GBP = 1 USD. Your exchange rate may already be converted this way if you are in the United Kingdom.

  3. Step 3

Convert British pounds to dollars by dividing the number of pounds you have by the conversion rate in terms of GBP. Using the example from Step 2, if you have 3 pounds, your formula would be 3 GBP / .5998 = 5 USD.
