Step 1
Look up the current exchange rate. If you are in the United States, the exchange rate will be written as the number of US dollars per 1 British pound. For example, 1.667 USD = 1 GBP

Step 2
Convert the exchange rate to read the number of British pounds per 1 USD. The formula is 1 divided by the current exchange rate you found in Step 1. For example, 1 / 1.667 = .5998. So, .5998 GBP = 1 USD. Your exchange rate may already be converted this way if you are in the United Kingdom.

Step 3
Convert British pounds to dollars by dividing the number of pounds you have by the conversion rate in terms of GBP. Using the example from Step 2, if you have 3 pounds, your formula would be 3 GBP / .5998 = 5 USD.
