The metal that door hardware is made from often has received varying degrees of abuse and ill-fated attempts at painting or staining over it.   • Chemical stripper
  • Polishing compound (ultra fine)
  • Lacquer thinner
  • Acrylic polyurethane clear coat

      Remove the hardware from the door. Use a chemical stripper according to the directions from the manufacturer. A chemical stripper is usually necessary to remove the portions of the clear coat that remain.

      Apply a polishing compound by rubbing it into the hardware and buffing out all the scratches likely caused by the cleaner. This process is not complicated; it just involves lots of elbow grease.

      Clean the hardware thoroughly using a lacquer thinner so that you remove all chemicals and residue from the polish.

      Finish the job by applying clear coat to the hardware. Apply a light coat of acrylic polyurethane, allow it to dry for about 5 minutes and apply another light coat. Let the clear coat cure untouched for at least 48 hours before putting it back on the door.
