Everybody loves a hot afternoon spent in the backyard swimming pool, but decking and pool tiles that are covered with calcium can dampen that enthusiasm. Calcium build-up on the pool-deck surface is normal, however, and there are steps you can take to both remove this whitish residue and keep it from coming back so often. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Determine the pool's PH and calcium levels using your pool test kit. This initial phase helps you blend the appropriate cleansing solution for the next step.
-
2
Mix and apply the cleaner. Use the appropriate level of muriatic acid solution as instructed on the label. If your calcium levels are over 400 parts per million (PPM), you may need to add a heavier amount of the cleaning solution. Using a sponge, test the cleaning solution on a small surface area of the pool deck. If successful in removing the residue, use that mixture on the entire calcified surface. If not, try a different mixture or call in a professional pool tile cleaner.

Prevent, prevent, prevent. Now that your pool deck is clean and decalcified, take preventative measures to ensure the build-up doesn't occur again in the future. Foremost is making sure the PH level remains at 7.2. Also, clean the pool regularly.

Tips & Warnings
Wear protective clothing at all times while mixing and applying the muriatic acid solution to your pool deck. Any exposure of this cleanser can cause severe and painful burning. Wear clothing that covers your entire body. Additionally, wear rubber gloves and a mask to protect your hands and face.
