How to Measure Bases for Baseball

Baseball is America's pastime. The rules are easy enough to understand, but there should also be some knowledge of the measurements involved, especially if you are wanting to set up a field for your own game. Properly measuring the bases on the field is easy as long as you have the right tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure each base with your measuring tape. Each base should measure 15-by-15 inches. An easier method for measuring the bases might be to use a 12-inch ruler instead.

    • 2

Use your measuring tape to mark off the distance between home plate and the rubber on pitcher's mound. The standard measurement is 60 feet, 6 inches, but the distance might be shorter for leagues for younger players.

    • 3

Measure the distance between home plate and first base, first and second bases, second and third bases, and third base and home plate. The distance between each of these should be 90 feet, though again, it might be shorter for younger players.

Having a helper to stretch your measuring tape is the easiest way to measure the distances between the bases. If you do not have a helper, simply dig the metal part of the end of the tape into the ground at one base, and walk 90 feet to where the next base should be placed.
