Remodeling with a fresh coat of paint can bring new life to a room and a great sense of satisfaction. That is, until some paint lands on the carpet, turning the event into a nightmare. Quick action with the right choice of chemicals and steam cleaner equipment will remove the paint and focus you back on the dream of elegant home decor.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    Paint Removal

  1. Step 1

Set up the steam cleaning unit as per the manufacturer's instructions.

  2. Step 2

Scoop, scrape and blot up paint with towels. This is important even if the paint has been on the carpet for a while. A plastic knife or spoon can aid in chipping away dry, crusty paint.

  3. Step 3

Rinse the affected area with the steam machine. Make wet passes, followed by several dry passes. Move the machine slowly over the paint, allowing the vacuum power to pull the maximum amount of paint out of the carpet.

  4. Step 4

Repeat until either the paint is completely removed, or the machine is no longer effective.

  5. Step 5

Apply a small amount of mineral spirits or other paint thinner to a terry cloth towel. Test an inconspicuous area of the carpet to make sure the mineral spirits will not harm the carpet. Gently work the cloth through the paint stain, working from the outside of the spill to the middle to avoid spreading. Blot to allow the paint to transfer from the carpet to the towel.

  6. Step 6

Rinse the mineral spirits or paint thinner from the carpet. Caution: Paint thinners are flammable and are not recommended to be extracted by most steam cleaning machines. Check with the manufacturer before rinsing the paint thinner. A safer alternative is to mist the area with clear water followed by blotting with a towel.

Tips & Warnings
  • Work quickly. The best time to remove paint from a carpet is while it is still wet.
  • Paint thinners are flammable. Keep away from open flame and sparks. Provide ventilation to the area while paint thinners are in use.
