Cigarette smoke is obnoxious to non-smokers and, health issues aside, permeates a home or car. Removing the cigarette smoke smell is much more involved than just opening some windows to let air into the home or car. There are a number of procedures that can help to remove the cigarette smoke smell, although there is no absolute guarantee that the odor will be completely removed.   • Nonabrasive household spray cleaner
  • Paper towels
  • Dry carpet cleaning
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • White vinegar

      Remove any cigarette butts or ash from ashtrays. Throw away the ashtrays.

      Clean out any receptacles used for cigarette ash that cannot be thrown away by spraying them with nonabrasive, household cleaner and wiping them out with paper towels.

      Open all of the windows of the car or home. Remove any carpeting and place it outside to air.

      Clean carpeting that cannot be removed by sprinkling on dry carpet cleaner. Vacuum up the dry carpet cleaner and smell the area to see if the smoke smell has been dissipated. Repeat the process as necessary to remove the smoke smell.

      Use the dry carpet cleaner and the vacuum on the rugs that have been placed outside.

      Clean out any air ducts and replace any filters in the home or car. Wash all plastic and metal surfaces with the nonabrasive household cleaner.

      Rent an ozone generator and leave it in the home or car for the day. Repeat the process until the smoke smell dissipates.

      Pour half of a bottle of white vinegar into a bowl. Set the bowl next to the area where the smoke smell is strongest. Place additional bowls as needed. Make sure there is adequate ventilation and leave the area for the day. Remove the bowls and dispose of their contents.

      Repeat the process two more times.
