How to Reduce the Side Effects of Tretinoin
Tretinoin is a topical medication derived from vitamin A. It is most commonly used for treating acne but is sometimes used for other skin conditions. Common brand names include Retin A and Renova. These medications are powerful and can cause side effects like dryness, redness, itching, peeling and irritation. You can do several things to minimize side effects of tretinoin. The Mayo Clinic offers several suggestions.

1
Do not use other topical treatments one hour before or after applying this medication. This can increase the risk of skin irriation.
-
2
Avoid applying certain products in the same areas of the body where you are applying tretinoin. Do not use items that have benzoyl peroxide, resorcinol, salicylic acid, sulfur or large amounts of alcohol. This list is not exhaustive. If you are not sure if a product is appropriate or not, ask your doctor for guidance. He can offer advice on what to avoid and what is appropriate.

3
Protect your face from excessive sunlight, wind or exposure to cold weather for the first six months of treatment. This is especially important for the first two or three weeks of use.
-
4
Wear sun block with a minimum of SPF 15 all year round; this is especially important during the first few months of treatment.
-
5
Use creams, lotions or moisturizers to reduce dryness and other side effects. If you are using tretinoin for acne, use water-based products; if you are using it for wrinkled, mature skin, use oil-based ones. Your doctor can recommend certain brands or advise you about appropriate ingredients to look for.
