Items you will need

  • World of Warcraft account

  • World of Warcraft armory

As a World of Warcraft player, it is inevitable that you will tire of the game someday and decide to focus your gaming attention elsewhere. What you may not realize is that your account could be very valuable, especially if you’ve invested a lot of time and energy into it. A number of factors will influence the value of your WoW account, and with a few simple steps and considerations, you’ll know what it’s worth.

Determine how many characters you have on your account, and in particular, the level of these characters. If you’ve played WoW for a long time, you might have several max-level characters spread among a variety of servers. In general, an account with multiple level-80s will be worth significantly more than one with a single character at max-level, or a smattering of low-level characters.

Inspect the overall gear quality of your main character. Typically, this will be determined by an average of the item levels of each piece of gear you own. This can be done by logging onto the WoW armory and mousing over your gear. Below the level requirement you’ll find the item level. In the current patch, gear with an item level of 245 and 258 will be the most valuable.

Check your character for any especially rare or difficult-to-obtain pieces of gear, which may be significantly more valuable than their item level alone indicates. Examples of this include “legendary” items, such as Val’anyr, a prized spell mace, item level 258 weapons, item level 272 cloaks, and rare trinkets.

Understand that cosmetic upgrades that you’ve made to your character could have a huge influence on its value. Things like titles (especially rare titles like “Hand of A’dal,” “Grand Crusader,” “Death’s Demise” and “Gladiator”), mounts and pets could greatly increase your account’s value.

Note whether your character has multiple sets of high-quality gear, designated for specific roles. For example, a level 80 shaman with gear sets for Enhancement, Elemental and Restoration specializations will be far more valuable than the same character with only an Elemental set. Individuals looking to buy an account will probably want to experiment with a few different play styles, and your character should be equipped to facilitate this.

Tips

The amount of gold contained throughout your account is important, but probably won’t have the same impact on your account’s value as your gear.

Having a solid set of PVP gear will increase your account’s worth.

Characters become outdated very quickly in WoW. The best time to sell is immediately after you’ve received a large number of upgrades.

Warnings

Selling an account is against Blizzard’s terms of service. Often, the account will be banned after it has been sold. The responsibility resides with the buyer.
