Use masking tape to divide the entire surface of the countertop into squares or rectangles with the sides of each being made up of the edge of the countertop or a piece of tape. The size and shape of the squares and rectangles does not matter. This step is not necessary if the shape of the countertop is simply a large square or rectangle.

Measure the length and width of a rectangle or square in feet using the tape measure.

Multiply the length and width of that rectangle or square to get the surface area of that part of the countertop. The area will be in square feet.

Repeat Step 2 and Step 3 for every rectangle or square you marked on the countertop.

Add together the area of every square and rectangle. This is the surface area of the countertop in square feet.
