Through a few simple steps, individuals who own an older model of the Blackberry can enjoy the newest applications and features on their device by installing and upgrading to a new RIM Blackberry OS.

      Determine the operating system of your Blackberry. To do this, click on the Options icon on your Blackberry's desktop. Then select About. The version of your operating system will be displayed as a series of numbers after a lowercase "v."

      Go to your wireless carrier's website (Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, etc.) and check to see if there is an OS more recent than the system you are currently running on your Blackberry. If so, download the OS and save it to your PC.

      Go to RIM's official website and download and install the most recent Blackberry Desktop Manager software.

      Open the new Blackberry OS. Close all applications on your PC before launching the .exe file. Begin installation by choosing Run and selecting the appropriate language.

      After the Desktop Manager software opens and the installation of the new OS is complete, connect your Blackberry to the PC with the USB cord. A dialogue box will appear asking if you would like to install upgrades. Click Update Now.

      After upgrades have been installed, click Next. The Application Loader page will come up explaining how your phone will be activated and registered with your wireless carrier. This is done automatically.

      Hit Finish. Your OS is being installed onto your device which will take between 45-60 minutes. You will know when your new OS has successfully installed when your phone's radio comes back on.
