How to Replace a Lost Automobile Key

Keys have a way of somehow disappearing, even when you set them down in the same location, every single day. This holds true for both house keys and your car keys. If you do not have any extra keys available you need to replace them sooner rather than later. Depending on the age and model of the car, replacing the lost automobile keys can become somewhat of a challenge, and be rather expensive.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact a hardware store or locksmith facility. If you have an older car that only uses a metal key to unlock the car and start the ignition, the companies can send out an individual to make you a replacement key on the spot.

    • 2

Call the dealership where you purchased the car. If you have since moved to a new city, contact a dealership that sells the car you have. This needs to be done if your car requires a key with a microchip installed to open and start the car.

    • 3

Have the dealership send out an individual who can make a new custom key for you. Once the actual metal key is made the person needs to program the key to function properly with your car.

Ask for a second key to be made and programmed. A second key is typically much cheaper than the first, and it gives you a backup, just in case the first key is lost again.

Pay the fee for the replacement automobile key. You are going to be charged for at least two items, the replacement key and the cost of programming the key.
