How to Trap Mud Minnows
Mud minnows are a variety of small fish that are often used by fishers for bait. They are usually found in the muddy areas of lakes or streams in North America. The easiest way to trap mud minnows is to use an actual minnow trap. These traps are made out of a variety of materials, including stainless steel and plastic. They can be found at any hunting and fishing store or online for about $10. With the right type of bait placed within your minnow trap, you will have dozens of minnows at your disposal. However, don't leave more than four dozen mud minnows in a trap at once because they will become cannibalistic and eat one another.

1
Pick a shady location to place your trap if possible. Mud minnows tend to flock to these areas.
-
2
Choose your bait. There are a variety of baits to use. The cheapest bait is bread. Roll 3 slices of bread into 3 different balls and place them inside your trap. Bread will dissolve quickly, so have a back-up bait handy.

3
Place your minnow trap. Make sure about ¾ of the trap is submerged and the trap is laying flat. If you do not place the trap flat, the minnows will not take your bait.

4
Replace your bait. If the bread has not worked, or your bread has dissolved, try some wet dog food. Use your pocket knife to puncture 7 holes in the lid of the dog food can. Place the can in the trap. Return trap. If you are willing to spend a little more for bait, try crab meat or leftovers from your last crab supper.

5
Fill your bucket ¾ full with water from the stream or lake. When you have caught several dozen mud minnows, dump them into this bucket. You now have mud minnows for fishing. Re-bait your trap and return it if you want to catch more minnows.
