Hydration packs, also known as water packs, revolutionized outdoor enthusiasts' drinking habits when they first arrived on the scene. No more stopping to reach for that water bottle; suddenly you could rehydrate on the move. Hydration packs may seem to be maintenance free but every once in a while--at least at the beginning and end of the season, and after heavy use--you should take a few minutes to properly clean your water pack.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dish detergent
  • Reservoir brush or bottle brush
  • Tube brush
  • Hydration bladder cleaning tablet or denture cleaning tablet.
  • Clothespins or wire coat hanger
  • Soft nylon brush
  1. Step 1

Remove the hydration reservoir from your hydration pack. Usually this involves working the main water bladder out of the pack, then working the hose and bitepiece out as well.

  2. Step 2

Fill the hydration reservoir with warm water and dish detergent. Scrub both the reservoir and the tube with a reservoir brush--a bottle brush works fine--and a tube brush. Empty the soapy water and rinse until the water runs clear.

  3. Step 3

Fill the reservoir with water once again and drop in either a hydration bladder cleaning tablet or a denture cleaning tablet. Let the reservoir stand for five minutes once the tablet is completely dissolved, then empty and rinse thoroughly.

  4. Step 4

Hang the reservoir to dry. Use clothespins to hang it, opening down, from a sturdy cord or bend a wire coat hanger and insert it through the mouth of the reservoir to hold it open--again, mouth down--to dry.

  5. Step 5

Soak the actual pack part of your hydration pack in a tub of cold water and dish detergent. Scrub with a soft nylon brush as necessary to remove soil, then hang to dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you'd rather not use cleaning tablets in your hydration reservoir, opt instead to submerge both the reservoir and the hose in a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water for about an hour, then rinse thoroughly and hang to dry.
