Choose a Planting Location

Test the soil. Take a soil sample to a landscape center or state extension office to evaluate the nutrient content of your soil. Dwarf Buford holly trees prefer mildly acidic, moist soil.

Choose an open, sunny location. Dwarf Buford holly trees will survive in shade but do best in full sun.

Allow adequate room for the roots to spread and the shrub to flourish at maturity, . Plant in a location that will not interfere with property boundaries or underground utilities.

Dig a hole twice as deep and twice as wide as the root mass of the shrub.

Fill the hole with water and allow to settle and drain.

Lift the shrub by the root ball, not the stem or trunk. Be careful not to damage the delicate root system.

Place the shrub centered in the hole and aligned vertically.

Fill the hole with a mixture of equal parts of soil, organic compost and peat moss.

Gently tamp the soil around the roots as it is added to fill in voids and air pockets.

Add water as you fill the hole so that the planting mixture is thoroughly settled around the roots.

Cover the planting area with a 2-to-3 inch layer of organic mulch. Straw, aged non-treated sawdust, newspaper or torn strips of cardboard may be used.

Top dress the mulch layer with a 1-to-2-inch layer of pine bark or decorative pebbles to help retain moisture and control weeds.

Water well. Dwarf Buford Holly trees are drought resistant but will benefit from a weekly soaking of the roots during dry spells.
