How to Clean Up Baking Soda Blasting

Baking soda blasting is a safe and environmentally friendly alternative to sand blasting paint off of a building or object. Sand can damage buildings and sculptures, while baking soda is soft and small enough to be safely used on important objects. Baking soda blasting was even used to clean the Statue of Liberty.

Things You'll Need

• Safety goggles
• Protective clothing
• Breathing mask
• Portable soda blaster or pressure blaster and soda blaster attachment
• Baking soda

Instructions

Prepare equipment

1. Rent or buy a soda blaster or pressure blaster with soda blasting attachment at your local hardware store.

2. Put on protective clothing, including goggles and mask.

3. Pour baking soda into tank where indicated, up to fill level.

Using the Soda Blaster

1. Following the directions that came with your blaster, turn on air flow.

2. Turn on blaster nozzle until you can see a steady stream of baking soda flowing out.

3. Point nozzle at object that needs cleaning, making sure to stay at least a foot away from object.

4. Move the nozzle in a steady sweeping motion until all paint has been cleaned away.

5. When finished, turn off blaster and wipe down object; to prevent rusting, leave a small amount of baking soda on metal.

Tips & Warnings

• Baking soda can be harmful to your lungs, so always wear a mask when doing baking soda blasting.
