Eyelash yarn is a novelty yarn where one-inch wisps of fiber flow away from the main strand like eyelashes. Some brands have fly-always in two lengths for extra fluffiness. When knit or crocheted, the yarn resembles a feather boa. This effect can be used as a design element to create jewelry, either independently or in combination with beads. Because the texture of eyelash yarn tends to run on the thick side, large-hole beads are necessary to fit over the yarn.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 ball of eyelash yarn
  • Beads
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors
  • T-pin or large straight pin
  • Toggle clasp
  • Crochet Hook size P (optional)
  • Second ball of eyelash yarn (optional)
  • Clear-drying white glue (optional)

    Knotted Eyelash Yarn Jewelry

  1. Step 1

String beads onto the yarn before you start if you want to add beads to your jewelry design. Use the yarn needle if you have trouble getting the beads on the eyelash yarn.

  2. Step 2

Tie knots in the yarn between the beads to separate them. You can add one knot or multiple knots; the design is up to you. If the holes in the beads are very large, you may need to tie the knots in the same location more than once. This will create a larger knot that stops your bead from moving.

  3. Step 3

Measure and cut the yarn to the length you want for your necklace, plus about eight inches for attaching the clasp. It's better to cut the yarn after you tie the knots because it's hard to predict how much yarn the knots will take up and you don't want the necklace to end up too short by cutting first.

  4. Step 4

Continue with the "Finishing" section to add a clasp to your necklace.

  5. Braided Eyelash Yarn Jewelry

  6. Step 1

Cut the yarn, with or without beads strung on it, into three equal length strands. Make sure that they are long enough for your necklace with approximately eight inches extra for adding the clasp.

  7. Step 2

Group the three strands together by one end and tie an overhand knot to join them, leaving a four inch tail for adding the clasp later.

  8. Step 3

Pin the knot to a sold surface such as your mattress so you can keep the strands straight and tight while you work with them.

  9. Step 4

Braid the strands together until you reach the bottom. Then, tie another knot to end the necklace, leaving about four inches for the clasp.

  10. Step 5

    Continue with the "Finishing" section.

  11. Crochet Eyelash Yarn Jewelry

  12. Step 1

String beads on one ball of the eyelash yarn if you want beads on your necklace.

  13. Step 2

Get the second ball of eyelash yarn. You will need two for this project.

  14. Step 3

Hold one strand of eyelash yarn from each ball together. Use different colors for a multi-color necklace. You will work with the two strands as if they were one throughout the project.

  15. Step 4

Create a slip knot in the yarn and place it on your crochet hook.

  16. Step 5

Make a chain stitch until the necklace is the length you want. To incorporate the beads, pull up one of the strung beads close to the crochet hook as you make the chain stitch.

  17. Step 6

    Continue with the "Finishing" section.

  19. Step 1

Separate the toggle clasp into its two halves. One piece goes on each end of the necklace.

  20. Step 2

Slide the ends of the yarn through the loops on the clasp pieces.

  21. Step 3

Tie an overhand knot two or three times to secure. Add a drop of white glue to the knot for extra security if you want.

  22. Step 4

Trim the ends close to the clasp.

Tips & Warnings
  • All the directions for necklaces can be used to create bracelets by adjusting the length of the finished item. A toggle clasp is also appropriate for a bracelet.
  • Try some macramé knots with the three strands of yarn instead of braiding to create a different style of necklace.
