How to Replace Treble Hooks

Trebel hooks on fishing lures can rust and weaken over time, requiring replacement. Hooks can also get bent out of shape from a snag on a branch or tree trunk. Once bent, the steel shank is weakened and is likely to break at some point, probably when the catch of the year is fighting on the end of the line. Treble hooks are so inexpensive that it only makes sense to inspect the lures in a tackle box and replace worn or rusted parts. All parts needed for the job can be purchased at a tackle shop and larger sporting goods stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Use wire cutters to cut off the looped end of a treble hook where it attaches to the permanent closed loop screwed into the body of the lure.

    • 2

Select replacement hooks the same size as the old treble hooks.

    • 3

Thread a split ring onto the closed loop at the end of a new treble hook using needle-nose pliers. A split ring is a small loop of wire with ends that can be lifted to connect another metal part. The split ring is then turned around the loop of the treble hook until it snaps into place. Split rings help the hooks rotate freely below a fishing lure to improve the action of the lure and reduce line twisting.

    • 4

Clip the other end of the split ring to the closed loop attached to the belly or tail of the fishing lure.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful when working with rusted fishing parts, especially hooks that could cause a nasty cut and a trip to the doctor's office for a tetanus shot.
