Practically everyone who has ever owned a pair of eyeglasses or sunglasses has had to deal with scratches. Lenses can be scratched from rolling around in a handbag or glove compartment, being dropped, even just normal everyday handling. Replacing lenses can be a hassle, and potentially very expensive if you have prescription lenses. Before you toss your glasses, try a few home remedies to remove the scratches. Depending on how deep the scratches are, you may be able to solve the problem yourself.

Things You'll Need:

  • Chamois cloth OR
  • Baby oil OR
  • Lens cleaner OR
  • Metal polish OR
  • Armour Etch
  1. Step 1

Rub the lenses with a chamois cloth. Chamois fabric has just enough texture to buff away lighter scratches, but won't create additional damage.

  2. Step 2

Use a commercial lens cleaner to clean the lens. Sometimes what you believe to be a scratch may in fact be a smudge or other superficial mark that comes off with the right solution.

  3. Step 3

Use a very small amount of metal polish to buff away a superficial scratch.

  4. Step 4

Put a small drop of baby oil on the lens. Rub it in a circular pattern for about 5 minutes. This should smooth the surface of the glass.

  5. Step 5

Try a product called Armour Etch if the scratch is fairly deep. This is a glass etching product that can be purchased at many craft stores or online. Apply the cream in a thick layer to both sides of the lens. Let it sit for five minutes and rinse off with cold water.

  6. Step 6

Take the glasses to a professional eyeglass repair shop if your home methods don't work. A professional buffing may be necessary for deeper scratches, but don't expect miracles, even professionals can't get out every scratch.
