Eyeglass lenses attract fingerprints, water spots, grease, dust and other debris. Glasses must be polished on a regular basis to get rid of this material and enable the user to see clearly through the lenses. Many devices and products are on the market to clean and polish your eyeglasses. Some claim to not smear or leave residue; others use lint-free cloths to wipe down the lenses and get rid of build-up.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Purchase a streak-free lens cleaner from your optometrist or drugstore. These cleaners are mild enough to use near your face, but will cut through the grease and grime that may build up on the lenses.

  2. Step 2

Spray the lenses with the lens cleaner, coating both sides of each lens. Gently wipe the lenses with a lint-free cleaning cloth. Polish the lenses using this same cloth once the lenses are dry.

  3. Step 3

Use a few drops of vinegar, or mix up a vinegar-water mixture in a spray bottle and use that to clean hard-to-remove greasy fingerprints or other spots. Vinegar helps break down the oils from your skin on the glasses. This will give you a streak-free finish as well.

  4. Step 4

Mix soapy water in the sink, or apply a drop of dish soap to each lens and rub it until the lenses are clean. Rinse the lenses thoroughly with clear water until the water beads up and runs cleanly off the lenses. Gently dry the lenses, then polish them with a lens polishing cloth.

  5. Step 5

Apply a polishing solution to extremely dirty or scratched lenses. Allow the compound to sit on the lenses for a few minutes. Then buff the excess solution away with a microfiber cloth. Rub the lenses until they are well polished with no visible scratches.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always use a lint-free cloth to wipe the lenses of your eyeglasses. Even the corner of an old t-shirt is better than using any type of disposable paper product.
  • Don't set your glasses down with their lenses toward the table or other resting surface. This will lead to scratches in the lenses, and the possibility of picking up more dirt and debris.
