1
Draw a sketch of the yard, assigning a purpose to each area. Note areas that will hold plants, decorations and furniture as well as spots used for general activities such as games and entertainment. Measure the areas so you know how much space you have for planting and other landscape features.
-
2
Select tropical greenery. Consider your planting zone and choose plants that will survive in your climate. Keeping tropical plants in pots with an island feel is another option, allowing you to take the plants inside once the weather turns cold. Consider using canna, calla lilies and banana plants. Ask the staff at a local nursery for specific suggestions if you're unsure what plants will thrive in your area.

3
Add a water feature to the landscape for a tropical oasis. Consider a waterfall cascading into a small pond to fit the theme. Surround the water feature with decorative rocks and tropical plants, either placed into the ground or in decorative flower pots.
-
4
Choose tropical furniture for a backyard landscape project. Add a few hammocks or wicker furniture to emphasize the island feeling. Choose a patio umbrella that resembles palm leaves.
-
5
Add a bamboo fence. Bamboo is a green building product that's growing in popularity. It suits the tropical theme and works well as a fence surrounding the backyard, or to hide mechanical items such as a central air unit.
-
6
Add colorful outdoor decorations that emphasize the tropical feeling. Remember, too, that bright colors are typical of island decor.
