A wool Persian carpet is a beautiful investment for your home. Treat your carpet well and it will last for years. Bleach, and many chemical cleaners, can not be safely used on wool carpets. Stains should be treated quickly to avoid them setting into the carpet. One particularly difficult stain to remove is cat urine. Once a cat has urinated on your rug, if the smell remains they will return to the same spot to urinate in the future. There are home treatments you can use to remove the cat urine stain, and smell, at home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • BAKING POWDER
  • Paper towels
  • Baking powder
  • Baking soda
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • ENZYMATIC CLEANERS
  • Paper towels
  • Enzymatic cleaner
  • VINEGAR
  • Paper towels
  • White vinegar
  • Water
  • Spray bottle
  • Scrub brush

    Baking Powder

  1. Step 1

Blot the urine with white paper towels. Get up as much urine as possible. Do not rub.

  2. Step 2

Sprinkle on a thick layer of baking powder over the urine spot. Baking soda can be used as a substitute for baking powder.

  3. Step 3

Let the baking powder sit for a few days.

  4. Step 4

Vacuum up the baking powder. It will have absorbed the remaining cat urine and smell. This treatment will only work for fresh urine stains. If the urine has worked its way into the underlying carpet padding, or flooring, a different treatment will be needed.

  5. Enzymatic Cleaner

  6. Step 1

Use a commercial cleaner designed to remove cat urine stains and smells. Look for an enzymatic cleaner which will break down the enzymes in the cat urine.

  7. Step 2

Blot up as much urine as possible with a paper towel.

  8. Step 3

Soak the urine spot with the cleaner. Be sure the cleaner soaks through all of the urine, including any that reached the carpet padding or flooring.

  9. Step 4

Let the treatment dry. Repeat if necessary.

  10. Vinegar

  11. Step 1

Blot up as much urine as possible with a paper towel.

  12. Step 2

Mix together 1 quart of water and 1/2 cup white vinegar. Add to spray bottle.

  13. Step 3

Spray urine spot. Treat all urine on the carpet and any padding or flooring which may have been harmed.

  14. Step 4

Place dry paper towels over the spot and cover with a heavy object to increase the absorption.

  15. Step 5

Let it remain for several hours and then remove towels. Gently brush the spot to raise carpet nap. Let dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • For stubborn stains or valuable rugs seek the advice of a rug cleaning professional.
  • Do not use bleach on wool carpets.
  • Test any treatment on an inconspicuous part of the carpet prior to applying the entire treatment.
  • If your cat is consistently urinating outside of the litter box, discuss the issue with your veterinarian. Inappropriate urination could be a sign of a medical issue.
  • Never use ammonia to clean a cat urine spot. The smell will remind the cat of their own urine and encourage them to return to the area to urinate.
