How to Use an Advair Disk

Advair is a popular medication used to treat asthma. The Advair Diskus is a metered-dose inhaler that combines two medications---fluticasone propionate, which is a bronchodilator, and salmeterol, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation---and delivers them simultaneously directly into the patient's lungs. The medication is stored in a blister pack in a round disk, called the Diskus. Each time you press the lever on the Diskus, a new dose of medication rotates into place. The mechanism in the Diskus punctures the blister pack and releases the medication in a powder form which you may then inhale. An indicator on the front of the Advair Diskus lets you know how many doses of medication you have left.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the Diskus from the foil pouch. Hold the Diskus level, with the label facing up. Fit your thumb into the thumb rest on the side of the Diskus and push your thumb over to open the cover of the Diskus.

    • 2

Hold the Diskus so the mouthpiece is toward you. Place your thumb or finger on top of the lever on the side of the Diskus and push down. This moves the next dose of medication into place and punctures the blister pack.

    • 3

Exhale completely, then bring the Diskus to your lips and breathe in deeply through your mouth. Hold your breath for about 10 seconds. Remove the Diskus from your lips and rotate the cover closed.

    • 4

Rinse your mouth thoroughly. Don't swallow the water; spit it out. This will help prevent thrush, or the growth of yeast in your mouth and throat.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once opened, the Advair Diskus should be used within 30 days. There is a space on the front of the package to note the day you began using the Diskus.

  • The Advair Diskus is not a substitute for a rescue inhaler and should not be used in the event of an asthma attack.
