Step 1
FIND OUT WHAT YOU NEED. The first step is to really think about what you NEED and WANT in a computer. It's kind of like dating, in a weird way. Since computers hold so much power in the world now, you want to make sure you know what your getting before you just throw in the money, get it and become disappointed once you find out you don't get the features you intended to. There might be a few questions you want to ask yourself such as: What will you be using the computer for? Is it business or personal? Do you need lots of space and memory? Now, depending on how much money you are willing to spend - you also need to analyze needs over wants. Just because you *want* that extra graphics card doesn't mean you actually need it. Those types of extra features can cost big bucks. So, if you need a computer jus to do simple things on - make sure you make the right choice over ogling the awesome extras. You also need to think about if you need a laptop or desktop. Desktops are great for personal home use. However, if you are on the go all the time - it's probably best to invest in a laptop. These are all important aspects in choosing the right computer.

Step 2
BUDGET YOURSELF. Yes, budgeting yourself on how much money you should spend on a computer is really important. Why? Well, it kind of goes hand-in-hand what the first step, what you truly NEED and/or want in a computer. Let's face it, the economy is crappy and a sale's person is going to push the limit because they get paid on commission. This is why it's important to figure out what you need and THEN how much to spend. If you go into a place and just ask for help - you are guaranteed to get the biggest sales pitch of your life and walk out with an empty pocket and unsure you have gotten what you wanted. Stick to your guns and stick to your price range.
-
Step 3
STICK TO BRAND NAMES. As common as computers are, most of us still have no clue about what makes a computer worthy of our money, truly. This is why it's important to stick to brand names and common sense choices rather than the no-frills off-brand type of computer. Yes, they may fit into your budget, but if you have never heard, seen, or even knew this brand existed -- it may not be worth the headache. Stick to mainstream brand names such as Dell, HP, Sony and so on. Of course, there is a new computer made everyday and some of the unknown computers out now may turn out to be big in a year from now -- most of them are just cheaper because they were manufactured cheaper and with cheaper parts. Be sure to be cautious and careful.
-
Step 4
TEST IT OUT. If there is one thing you do before purchasing a computer, test it out first. Make sure you are comfortable with it and make sure everything is functioning just as you want it to be. You might need to do a little research before hand to educate yourself on that certain computer you are planning on purchasing. Once you have tested it out, ask for a WARRANTY to give you piece of mind if something should happen once you get it home.
-
Step 5
UPDATES. Once you get your dream computer, be sure to check for updates and add-ons to enhance your computer and keep it up to date. If you keep all your software and hardware updated, your computer should last you a good long while and prevent you from having to repeat this whole computer-shopping experience again!
