Step 1
Graduate from high school; it's hard to get into a cosmetology school without a high school diploma or GED.
-
Step 2
Decide if you want a two year associate of arts in a cosmetology school, or a certificate in one or more of the specific branches of the profession (typically the shorter route).
-
Step 3
Enroll in a cosmetology school. After you've picked a program length, enroll in the courses.
-
Step 4
Learn everything cosmetology; possibly including but not limited to: skin care, spa procedures, hair cut and color, and nails.
-
Step 5
Complete an apprenticeship. In some states, an apprenticeship can take the place of cosmetology school. Check with your state officials (likely the department of health, who issues the license) in order to find out if this is an option for you.
-
Step 6
Get your cosmetology license in the state that you want to work in (you must first complete and pass your entire cosmetology program).
