There are some people, such as farmers, that like skunks because they eat mice and things. But most of us don't want them anywhere nearby. Skunks get into things, have been known to carry rabies and they can leave behind the most horrible scent imaginable. If you want to learn how to keep skunks away from your house, there are some things you can do.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remove all wood and rock piles from your yard or property. Skunks like to hide in any place that provides a small opening that they can fit into.

  2. Step 2

Pick up all dog food in the afternoon. Skunks quickly learn that they can find a quick meal in a dog's dish. Do not leave your pet's dishes outside in the evening or overnight.

  3. Step 3

Cover any openings that allow access under your patio or porch. Skunks love to live under porches. If you think one may be living under yours, you are probably right. This is a favorite spot for skunks. Cover all openings, even very small ones.

  4. Step 4

Secure your trash can. Make sure that it has a lid that closes tightly and will not fall off if the can is tipped over.

  5. Step 5

Close all garages and sheds. Secure all openings to them, too. Skunks will find these places to be a very comfortable home.

  6. Step 6

Turn on the bright lights. New studies have shown this to help keep skunks away from construction sites.

  7. Step 7

Remove composting piles. This is a skunks dream buffet! Find a secure composting bin or put off composting for the time being.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you do encounter a skunk, walk away slowly and quietly. They will usually spray only when threatened.
