Make a Thanksgiving Craft with a Recycled Tin Can

Fall has always been one of my favorite seasons. Pumpkins, fall festivals, beautiful leaves and Thanksgiving are really more enjoyable to me than most holidays. There is not much financial stress, gift decisions, etc... The whole season is much more relaxing than Christmas to me. I think part of it is that the Thanksgiving holiday now contains much of what Christmas celebrations used to be! It takes us back to the way it used to be; Thanksgiving celebrations have changed very little from their original form, minus the Indians and Pilgrims. We enjoy time with family, we appreciate the beautiful earth God made when it is at it's most beautiful. We sing those wonderful songs we used to sing at school in the good old days: "For the Beauty of the Earth," "We Gather Together," and " Come Ye Thankful People, Come." I LOVE Thanksgiving. I have a dear friend who says she makes a point of celebrating Thanksgiving in a big way because of the way the business world has glossed right over it and jumped to "Have Yourself a Me Me Me little Christmas!"

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tin can from soup, vegetables, etc...
  • Tacky Glue
  • A Thanksgiving or harvest theme dinner napkin with deep colors and dark background.
  • Very cheap, high lacquer hair spray
  • If you want to attach a handle, you need floral wire.
  1. Step 1

For this project, you need to wash and dry the can, removing all labels and adhesive.

  2. Step 2

Remove the back layer if the napkin, if it is two-ply.

  3. Step 3

Measure the napkin around the can with an overlap. Leave just enough extra at the top to fold over the sharp edge.

  4. Step 4

Glue the Thanksgiving napkin, cut to correct size, to the can with tacky glue.

  5. Step 5

Before the glue dries, spray well with the hair spray. Saturate the napkin-covered can very well a couple of times. Watch as the napkin colors deepen into stained glass.

  6. Step 6

If you want, you can add a wire handle. You will need thin floral wire. Punch holes in the to of the can on each side, threads through. Decorately curl the wire around a pencil or something, if desired. You can also tie a bow around the handle out of raffia, ribbon, or strips of fabric.

  7. Step 7

These make a great pencil caddy or catchall. See picture.

on 11/24/2009 I like it....we gather together..that's what the season is all about. The joy of being together, sharing, loving, and caring. So many have lost these ideals. Your craft idea is good, but your message is great!!!
