Colorful no sew blankets in soft warm fleece are a delight to swaddle a new baby or cuddle up in on a cold night. Fleece blankets are durable, wash easily and hold their bright colors well. They make wonderful additions to a layette for a baby shower gift or as a personalized throw for just about anyone.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fleece
  • Rotary cutter (without teeth)
  • Scissors
  • Crochet hook
  1. Step 1
    Choose fabric
    Choose fabric

Decide the size preference for the fleece blanket. Choose fabric according to size, color and design preference, weight, and cost. Heavier weight fleece fabric is warmer and more expensive.

  2. Step 2
    Cut to size
    Cut to size

Use sharp sewing scissors or the regular rotary cutter to cut the fabric to desired size. Fleece throws are smaller than standard blankets and usually more rectangular shaped. Baby layette size are often square.

  3. Step 3
    Cut slits
    Cut slits

Cut small 1/4" slices every 3/4" along each side approximately 1" in from the edge of the fleece. An optional method is to purchase a rotary cutter with cut-outs (teeth) which makes short work of making these slight cuts.

  4. Step 4
    Fringe strips
    Fringe strips

Cut an 8" wide strip of fleece. Use the regular rotary cutter to cut strips in 3/4" widths for the blanket fringe. Because no sew blankets are made to preference, it is difficult to determine how many strips may be needed until after one whole side has been fringed.

  5. Step 5
    Hook the strip
    Hook the strip

Bring the crochet hook up through the underside of the fleece through one of the holes starting at the corner. Wrap a strip around and bring it back down through the hole.

  6. Step 6
    Pull ends through loop
    Pull ends through loop

Pull the two ends of the strip through the loop on the underside and pull taut. Adjust as needed.

  7. Step 7
    Finish all sides
    Finish all sides

Continue the fringing process around all four sides. Add a strip at each corner to give the corners a finished look.

Tips & Warnings
  • These are an easy project to complete quickly and make a wonderful contribution to the Project Linus group that collects newly constructed blankets for sick or otherwise traumatized children.
  • Be ware of any potential hazard of using blankets with fringes for small children.
