How to Study for Culture Questions on HESI

Health care workers including nurses, come in contact with people from different cultures due to the nature of their work. It is therefore important for nurses to be culturally competent. You may be tested on how to interact with individuals from other cultures on nursing exams or on the HESI exit exam.

Instructions

1. Familiarize yourself with the different cultures in your fundamentals of nursing textbook. Read up on the different cultures and while you do this, note the characteristics of each one as related to communication

2. Bear in mind that people of various cultures have alternative health practices which they incorporate into their health life styles. Write down the health practices of each culture you study and the adverse effects if any.

3. Always keep this fact in mind: the best way to learn more about a persons culture is to ask them about it. Consider this also: it is important to not cause the patient cultural pain. Therefore, confer with the patient if it is necessary to interfere with their cultural practice in order to provide them with care.
