Yep...looks like my card...blue!
Yep...looks like my card...blue!

Well, I earned another Forest Gump - Stupid is - As Stupid does, sticker. My forehead is getting pretty crowded. Why, you ask? Because I use my two Debit Cards for everything, and here I forgot about the risks in using these and not my CCards. I should have known better. If you're a FG recipient, too, perhaps you forgot that a DCard is a direct link to your bank accounts giving some clever person a chance to wipe you out.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Oh, oh.....
    Oh, oh.....

Pauline, my bank customer service lady, laid in on the line the other day when I inquired about fact and fiction concerning Debit Cards. She says it's less protection than a credit card; real financial problems if the card is stolen or a sneaky person is peeking over your shoulder while you're at the ATM. (see picture) She told me about the bank security nailing two guys who were sitting on a bench outside near the two ATM's using a small camera to zoom in and snatch the bank and pin numbers on unsuspecting customers. Yikes, what's next!

  2. Step 2

She also gave me a simple brochure of bank information on how to protect myself - especially with the upcoming Holiday Season. I condensed it and rewrote some of the info in plain English so we can all understand.
    1. Empty your wallet/purse of items you don't use....especially a ton of credit/debit cards. My wife carries 5 CCards with her. I'd love to steal her purse. 2. Never let your debit card out of your sight, and for God's sake, never use it at a bar or restaurant unless you can actually see the waiter/bartender using the card and returning it promptly.

  3. Step 3
If this is the ATM way out of town, Good Luck!
If this is the ATM way out of town, Good Luck!

    3. Never, ever use an ATM that is sitting alone in a market or retail store or outside in the "boonies" 6 miles from town. There may be a small camera hookup to record your credit card and pin number. If that happens, you're screwed. 4. Check your debit card accounts at least twice a week to verify all the charges are yours.

Tips & Warnings
  • Finally, if you do business online, make sure your computer security is up to date and don't shop at online places that don't have a green banner in the address bar when checking out.
