Bake sweet potatoes for an inexpensive, healthy treat.
Bake sweet potatoes for an inexpensive, healthy treat.

Homemade baked sweet potato chips are a healthy alternative to salty, oily snack foods like commercial potato chips. They are simple to prepare and you can adjust the seasonings to your own taste. Sweet potatoes are lower in carbohydrates than white potatoes and contain lots of vitamins A and C. Baked sweet potato chips are great as snacks, in lunches, or at parties.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sweet potatoes-about 3
  • 2-4 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • Salt and/or other seasonings, to taste
  • Cookie sheet
  1. Step 1

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

  2. Step 2

Lightly coat one or more cookie sheets with oil. If you do not have a lot of room in your oven you may need to make the sweet potato chips in batches.

  3. Step 3

Wash the sweet potatoes. Scrub them to get rid of any excess dirt. Peel them if you prefer.

  4. Step 4

Slice the sweet potatoes. You can use a food processor or slice them by hand. The slices should be about 1/8” thick.

  5. Step 5

Put the sweet potato slices in a large bowl with the remaining oil and toss them. Make sure the sweet potato slices are lightly coated. This is also the time to add seasonings, such as salt, chili powder or garlic. They are also delicious plain.

  6. Step 6

Spread the sweet potato slices out in single layer on the oiled cookie sheet.

  7. Step 7

Bake the sweet potato slices for about 15 minutes. Turn them over half way through the baking time. They are done when they are crisp and look golden brown.

  8. Step 8

Drain the excess oil from the baked sweet potato chips by laying them on paper towels.

  9. Step 9

Store the sweet potato chips for up to a week in tightly lidded container-if they last that long!
