Step 1
Place rocks in a plastic cylinder shaped item. You can use a section of old pool hose, a medium sized round shampoo bottle etc. It just has to be slightly larger than a votive candle. If you are using an item without a bottom secure plastic wrap over one end to keep the rocks inside.
-
Step 2
Fill a small plastic bucket such as a child sand pail or an old clean coffee can about ¾ of the way with water.
-
Step 3
Apply shortening to the cylinder with the rocks inside.
-
Step 4
Place the cylinder in the center of the bucket or coffee can.
-
Step 5
Put some pine needles, whole cranberries or holly leaves in the water.
-
Step 6
Place the containers in your freezer or if it is consistently below 32°, even during the day, leave them outside to freeze.
-
Step 7
When frozen solid, this can take 1 to 4 days depending on the temperature and the size of your container, remove them from the freezer.
-
Step 8
Remove the center cylinder. If you have trouble removing the cylinder pour water in the cylinder to defrost the shortening and it should slide right out after a few minutes. Turn the bucket upside down in your sink, run warm water over the container until the ice slides out.
-
Step 9
Wipe the excess shortening out of the center hole with a paper towel.
-
Step 10
Place the ice block on a plate. Place a votive or tea light candle in the center hole. Put pine cones, pine branches or holly around the outside of the ice block.
-
Step 11
Place ice blocks along your driveway or outside stairs and light the candles.
